Graduate Spanish alumna is the Language Resource Center Director in Modern and Classical Languages at Wheaton College!

Arielle Akines, Ph.D., is now the Language Resource Center Director in Modern and Classical Languages at Wheaton College! Arielle completed her MA in the Department of World Languages and Literatures in 2015 with a thesis titled "Hispanic Representations on Media Platforms: Perspectives and Stereotypes in the Meme, Television, Film, and on YouTube.” From here, Arielle won a competitive residency post at the Latino Museum Studies Program of the Smithsonian Latino Center (2016). She then went on to graduate from the University of Houston with a doctorate in Hispanic Linguistics in 2019, focusing her dissertation on Afro-Latino Language attitudes and identity in the US and Latin America. Dr. Akines’ work centers on bilingualism and building connections through language practice at Wheaton College.
