Dr. Catherine Jaffe

Biography: Catherine M. Jaffe earned a B.A. in Honors English from Georgetown University, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago. She is Professor of Spanish at Texas State University and also teaches in the Honors College, where she coordinates the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program. Dr. Jaffe is Vice-President of the Texas State chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She is active in professional organizations such as the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the Modern Languages Association, the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas, and the Sociedad Española de Estudios del Siglo XVIII. She is Secretary/Treasurer of the Ibero-American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and serves on the editorial boards of the journals Dieciocho: Hispanic Enlightenment and Studies in Eighteenth -Century Culture.
Research Interests: Research Interests: Dr. Jaffe's research interests in modern Spanish and comparative literature focus on women writers and theories of gender and reading in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Spain. Her publications include studies of quixotism, translation, and feminism in the Spanish Enlightenment. She co-edited Eve’s Enlightenment: Women’s Experience in Spain and Spanish America, 1726-1839 (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2009), and is currently working on an edition and biography of the Spanish Enlightenment reformer and writer, María Lorenza de los Ríos y Loyo, Marquesa de Fuerte-Híjar (1761-1821).
